Tidwell's Orthotics Casting Requirements

A practitioner’s cast plays a crucial role in the manufacturing of a properly fitting and functioning device. So please take a moment to look over our casting requirements.

How to cast for an AFO
When prepping your patient for casting, have patient sit with hip, knee and ankle at 90 degrees. Mark all bony prominences. Begin applying casting material (no slipper molds). Be sure to cast 1” above desired finished brace height. After casting material is applied, correct foot and ankle to desired position. Apply slight pressure to the top of the knee to simulate weight bearing.

How to cast for a CROW boot
When prepping your patient for casting, have patient sit with hip, knee and ankle at 90 degrees.  Mark all bony prominences.  Begin applying casting material.  Be sure to enclose toes with casting material (very important).  Cast 1” above fibula head.  Place foot on foam board.  After casting material is applied, correct foot and ankle to desired position.  Apply slight pressure to the top of the knee to simulate weight bearing.
